WHO IS A MISSIONARY?
UNDERSTANDING THE BASIC THEOLOGY OF MISSIONS-PART TWO. Since the word missionary was not used in the Bible, different people have defined who a missionary is at different times based on the perspective of thinking. A missionary is called and sent by God with a specific mandate to a particular people. A missionary is called by God to take the gospel of the kingdom of God to people that have not received it. The Bible tells of different individuals and groups of people who were called at different times to fulfill a missionary mandate. In the Old Testament it was God the Father who played the role as sender of missionaries for example, Abraham was called by God as an individual: (more…)
WHO IS A MISSIONARY?
THE LOCAL CHURCH AND GLOBAL MISSIONS-PART SEVEN. “Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” (Matthew 28:18-20). (more…)
THE LOCAL CHURCH AND GLOBAL MISSIONS-PART SIX. The seventy-two returned with joy and said, “Lord, even the demons submit to us in your name.”
He replied, “I saw Satan fall like lightning from heaven. I have given you authority to trample on snakes and scorpions and to overcome all the power of the enemy; nothing will harm you. However, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names are written in heaven.” (Luke 10:17-20)
GIVING MISSION PRIORITY IN THE CHURCH-PART 8. “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth” ( Acts 1:8).
What qualifies a man to be effective witness for Christ? Certainly, different people will have different opinions. I will not be surprised to hear people saying things like: A good biblical and evangelism training, good communication skill, wealth, social status etc. But I think in as much as those things are very important the Bible mentioned a fundamental element that an effective preacher of the gospel cannot do without which is POWER. GIVING MISSIONS PRIORITY IN THE CHURCH-PART 2. Zachariah was one of the most active and gifted members of his church. One day he had a special encounter with God, during which the Lord spoke to him that He was calling him into cross- cultural missions. Zachariah went to his Pastor to share this experience with him. The first response of the pastor was that, you did not need to leave the church before you fulfil your mission call. The church will set up a Mission Department and you will be the head of Mission Department of the church. Zachariah complied with his pastor and within a year a Mission Department was set up in the church and Zachariah was heading the department. For 2yrs Zachariah’s mission’s involvement did not go beyond administrative works, and all within the church. He began to feel uncomfortable with his situation because he knew that, that was not what God had called him to do. (more…)
GIVING MISSIONS PRIORITY IN THE CHURCH-PART 1. Many local churches have understood the plan of God concerning missions today, and they are doing wonderfully good. Many of these churches put mission as major priority in their annual budgeting and planning. A lot of individual disciples are also investing their God given resources and time to advance missions, many are supporting missions through their prayers and many are offering their lives to serve as front line missionaries in different continents. The third world is no longer left out in missions’ venture as many countries that were receiving missionaries are now senders of missionaries. Despite this progress, some churches are still indifferent to God’s missionary call; hence little or no attention is given to missions in their programs and planning. This is not supposed to be so! Every church is to be actively involved in missions. Let us consider what the Lord Jesus Christ said when He talked of the church for the first time in the Bible. (more…)
